Approximately 100 people joined our annual winter networking social at The Collective in Seattle, designed to connect women in the biotech and life sciences industries. Upon check-in, attendees received a seemingly random word on their name tags and a card to track the names of others whose words were linked to theirs. As the evening unfolded, participants discovered that the words were grouped into fun categories like "movies," "body parts," and "flowers." Most attendees connected with others in their category, and those who found eight or more associated words won prizes from Programs Chair Margaret Kenrick and volunteer Heidi LeBlanc.
The event's design made it easy for attendees to forge new connections within the community. Bella Reichardt, a PhD student in the University of Washington's bioengineering program, said, "I came tonight because I wanted to meet other women in the Seattle area in the industry and talk to them about their jobs. It's such a great opportunity to network." Dani Faivre added, "I'm always open to meeting more women in the community! I think it's great that WIB is able to put on events that really emphasize the power of connection."
