YWIB-Pittsburgh & Cook Myosite: Muscles and Medicine – Panel & Networking Session

October 30, 2024

On October 30, 2024, 35 high school students gathered at Cook Myosite’s laboratory to explore the company’s role in the biotechnology industry, develop networking skills, and learn about various careers within a successful biotech organization. The event featured a panel of women from diverse roles at Cook Myosite, including scientists, managers, engineers, and quality control specialists. Students engaged in discussions about the skills required for effective networking and crafted their own personal elevator pitches. They then had the opportunity to practice networking with employees from Cook Myosite. A working lunch with pizza provided a casual setting for further interaction, and the day concluded with a campus tour, offering a deeper understanding of the company’s operations.

The event emphasized that academic and career paths often take unexpected turns and that all experiences contribute to becoming a valuable asset to a startup company. Students were encouraged to seize opportunities, fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and hands-on learning—skills directly applicable to real-world STEM careers.

The students were inspired by the Cook Myosite staff, with many stepping out of their comfort zones to discuss career aspirations openly. A follow-up event is planned for February 2025, where students will delve deeper into networking and professionalism, with a particular focus on empowering women in the corporate world. Ten members of WIB-Pittsburgh and Cook Myosite employees supported the event, making it a truly impactful experience for the students.
