On April 13, 2026, WIB-Pittsburgh hosted an event at Duquesne University that brought together 37 undergraduates, graduate students, and recent grads for a practical look at breaking into the field with a bio-related degree. The event kicked off with informal mingling, giving attendees a chance to connect with panelists before a discussion featuring Sydney Borcherding, Kim Daloise, Hayley Jenkins, and Theresa Wohlever, moderated by WIB member and Duquesne professor Leda Klouda. The speakers walked through their own career paths, shared what the job search really looks like, and offered honest advice on turning long-term goals into actionable plans. A big theme throughout was the importance of networking and building strong relationships early—especially by staying connected on platforms like LinkedIn—as well as developing both technical and soft skills. They also emphasized that careers are rarely linear and that perseverance matters. The conversation carried into a lively Q&A and networking session, where attendees were especially encouraged by the idea that even in a challenging job market, growth is still very much possible if you keep building along the way.
