WIB-Metro New York's 2025-2026 YWIB Ambassador, Parker Janes, recently created and led The Bee Project, a fun and educational three-part series, designed to teach girls about the importance of bees and other pollinators. Parker partnered with the Girl Scouts to organize this event as her capstone project. The program began at a weekly Girl Scouts meeting in Brooklyn, where 30 girls learned about different bee species, the types of flowers bees are drawn to, and even the colors bees can and cannot see. The girls also had the chance to create their own bees using worksheets and share their personal stories and experiences with bees, which quickly became one of the most engaging parts of the event.
The second meeting brought the group to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where the Girl Scouts explored the gardens and observed bees interacting with flowers in their natural habitat. One especially memorable moment happened when a group of Girl Scouts paused their exploration to rescue a beetle that had become stuck in a small pool of water. The series concluded with a wrap-up Zoom presentation where the group reviewed their findings from the garden visit and discussed simple ways to help protect bees and pollinators in their own communities.
Great job, Parker, for facilitating this project that created a meaningful hands-on learning experience that inspired curiosity, compassion, and a deeper appreciation for the role pollinators play in our environment.
