On November 12, the Young Women In Biology (YWIB) Metro New York Committee volunteers, along with other organizations, including academic institutions and non-profits, were present at the Liberty Science Center’s MiniMed Diabetes Seminar and Career Exploration Fair. The MiniMed fair event was held for high school students interested in STEM, medicine, and the health sciences. More than 180 students from across New Jersey—including Marian P. Thomas PAC, Marian P. Thomas STEAM, Union City High School, Wall High School, Belleville High School, and Dickinson High School, attended the event. Students had the opportunity to learn about the biology of diabetes, current clinical approaches, and the importance of early prevention and community health.
During the event, students engaged in interactive activities, explored hands-on demonstrations, and spoke directly with professionals working across research, clinical care, and biotechnology. A special highlight of the program was a diabetes fact sheet designed by our high school intern, Elza Zamarin. Through this resource, students learned the difference between glucose and insulin, how Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes develop, the nutritional components of a well-balanced meal, and the sugar content of common snacks and drinks. The fact sheet sparked thoughtful discussion and helped ground the scientific concepts in students’ everyday experiences. We extend our thanks to all volunteers and organizers, including Dawn Fallon, Mini Gururaj, Yana Zorina, Rusia Lee who were instrumental in organizing and/or staffing the event, and the rest of the YWIB-Metro New York team—for helping inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.
