On August 27, WIB-San Diego took a break from meetings, emails, and event planning to celebrate the people who make our chapter possible: our incredible volunteers. Hosted at Hera Hub San Diego, the Volunteer Appreciation Evening brought volunteers from across our committees together for two relaxed hours of connection, appreciation, and community. Following a warm welcome from Hera Hub, WIB CEO Joanne Kamens shared reflections on the power of volunteering and the individual contributions that come together to make WIB what it is.
One of the evening’s most meaningful moments was Joanne’s starfish story—a simple reminder that while we may not be able to make a difference for everyone, the difference we make for even one person matters. It was a fitting message for a group of volunteers who give their time and energy to support and strengthen our community.
After that, it was time to simply enjoy being together! Over tacos, music, Italian granita, and plenty of conversation and laughter, volunteers had the chance to connect with one another outside of their usual roles and responsibilities. The celebration even welcomed a few special guests beyond the usual crowd, including a baby and a four-legged friend!
The greatest accomplishment of the evening wasn’t a presentation or activity—it was the opportunity to strengthen relationships, celebrate what we’ve built together, and remind our volunteers that their contributions truly matter. Attendees described the evening as fun, welcoming, and a wonderful opportunity to connect, and we hope everyone left feeling appreciated, energized, and proud to be part of WIB-San Diego.
A heartfelt thank you to all of our volunteers, to Joanne Kamens for joining us, and to Hera Hub San Diego for helping us create such a memorable evening. Every contribution, big or small, helps our community grow and thrive—and this evening was all about celebrating the people who make that possible.
