Our sold-out November 5 event, hosted by Vertex Pharmaceuticals at its Torrey Pines campus, brought together four leaders—Chorom Pak, Gaby Millan, Chelsea Hewitt, and Pam Gardner—who shared their personal experiences and insights on the many paths to leadership. The discussion highlighted the importance of understanding one’s background and roots as a foundation for growth, while also embracing the power of making bold decisions and taking leaps into the unknown. The panelists reminded attendees that fear should not be avoided—being afraid means being alive—and that courage often comes before confidence. They also emphasized that leadership is not a solitary path but one strengthened by trusted partnerships and collaboration, noting that if you are the smartest person in the room, you may be in the wrong room. Growth, they shared, comes from surrounding yourself with people who challenge, inspire, and elevate you. The conversation further explored authenticity, adaptability, and purpose as essential pillars of leadership. Panelists encouraged attendees to define the value they bring to any new role, to move forward with intention, and to lead with courage and self-awareness. They discussed how authenticity extends even to how one presents themselves—dressing boldly can reflect confidence and a strong sense of self. The discussion also touched on resilience, emphasizing that true success requires both adaptability and harmony between mind and body. Ultimately, the panelists shared that when a person takes a genuine step toward leadership and purpose, the community will meet them halfway. The event left attendees inspired to embrace courage, authenticity, and connection as essential elements of leadership.
WIB-San Diego extends sincere thanks to Vertex Pharmaceuticals for their generous sponsorship, hospitality, and new friends and colleagues made.
