On a recent afternoon at the Chestnut Hill Library in Chestnut Hill, PA, eight local Girl Scouts participated in a STEM Badge event hosted by Young Women In Bio (YWIB). The goal of the event was to help the scouts explore connections between their personal interests and future careers in STEM, while also completing the requirements to earn their STEM badge. YWIB volunteers used brainstorming and affinitization techniques to help the scouts reflect on their early interests and identify ways they might align with various STEM career paths. The range of ideas—from genetic engineering to sports medicine—highlighted the girls' creativity and curiosity.
A highlight of the event was a panel discussion featuring women currently working in STEM fields. The panelists shared their academic backgrounds, described how their careers evolved over time, and offered valuable insights into the diverse opportunities available in STEM. The scouts asked thoughtful questions, clearly inspired by the personal stories and practical advice shared during the discussion.
At the conclusion of the event, YWIB presented each scout with a STEM badge in recognition of their engagement and achievement. The panel discussion proved to be especially impactful, as it gave the scouts a chance to envision themselves pursuing STEM careers.
