YWIB-San Francisco Bay Area: Stitching Success – A Suturing Workshop for Future Women in Medicine

April 16, 2025

On April 16, 2025, Young Women In Bio (YWIB) San Francisco Bay Area organized a hands-on workshop designed for young women interested in exploring the world of medicine and healthcare. The attendees gathered for an engaging evening to delve into the art of suturing. The event was generously hosted by Zai Labs at the South San Francisco office. YWIB provided suturing kits and delicious pizza. To begin the event, Katie Holm from Zai Labs offered welcoming remarks, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to support such an impactful activity. The chapter co-chair, Juniper Scribner, warmly welcomed the participants and introduced the event's purpose. Dr. Barbara Troupin, a board-certified MD with extensive experience in the biotech industry, led the workshop. Dr. Troupin, with her expertise in clinical, medical, regulatory, and operational roles, has been actively involved with Women In Bio since 2008, serving as a mentor and leader.

The workshop commenced with Dr. Troupin guiding the participants through the art of suturing, covering topics such as skin, wounds, and suturing techniques. Each student followed along with their own suturing kit as they learned. The event included networking time, allowing time for Q&A on career opportunities in bio. Overall, the workshop provided a valuable platform for young women to explore healthcare careers, gain practical skills, and build connections within the industry. Events like these play a crucial role in empowering the next generation of Women In Bio and healthcare.
