Our mission at YWIB-San Francisco Bay Area is to create programs and events that ignite girls’ curiosity in the sciences while nurturing a business and entrepreneurial spirit. Our events are geared towards encouraging middle and high school girls to consider the life sciences as a career choice by giving them exposure to different aspects of the thriving Bay Area biotechnology ecosystem. 

As one of the country’s leading biotechnology sectors, the San Francisco Bay Area has a vibrant STEM scene. Our local YWIB chapter leverages this environment to partner with a number of organizations to plan multiple events to inspire and cultivate interest among young women wanting to pursue careers in STEM. YWIB-San Francisco Bay Area has been making a concerted effort to connect the local community, especially those in under-resourced areas, to the booming biotech industry.

In 2018, the YWIB-San Francisco Bay Area chapter partnered with College Track Bay Area to curate content specifically for their students. College Track is a national organization that works with first-generation students from low-income communities, affording them the ability to earn a life of opportunity, choice, and power through higher education.

We also have the YWIB Ambassador program, an initiative created by YWIB in response to the growing number of girls looking for ways to get involved and help lead efforts to accelerate and encourage STEM opportunities for girls in their communities and beyond. Ambassadors are integral to the planning of events and programs hosted by their local chapter. They will also actively engage with YWIB to raise awareness in STEM and encourage girls both locally and nationally to pursue their passion for STEM.

YWIB Partnerships

We have a specific interest in engaging with organizations serving low income neighborhood schools. A few examples of efforts include outreach with California Life Sciences Institute and San Francisco Unified School District; College Track (SF and Oakland) and Pfizer; the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula; and Citizen Schools in San Jose.
