On November 12, 2024, YWIB-Metro New York leaders joined mentors and 20 young women participating in the Weill Cornell Medicine Mentorship Program for an exciting in-person session in New York City. Part of a year-long initiative for high school girls passionate about pursuing careers in medicine, this was the first face-to-face meeting for the cohort held at the medical school. During the session, mentors guided the students through a problem-based learning case study revolving around an ER diagnostic workup, offering a hands-on simulation of how emergency physicians identify patient issues and determine treatments. PBL is a learning method used widely in medical schools to reason through a differential diagnosis and treatment plan. Afterward, the students had the chance to connect informally with their mentors over a pizza dinner, learning more about the journey to becoming a doctor.
Special thanks to the incredible mentors—Nadia Khan, Nicole Frontera, Milisia Fam, and Ilissa Pipia—and the tireless efforts of organizer Sahira J. Torres. Cavan Farley, Co-Chair of YWIB New Jersey, and Wendy Diller, Chair of YWIB-Metro New York, were also in attendance to support the event. The program continues through February 2025, with hopes for additional in-person meetings to enrich this inspiring experience for the participants.
