YWIB Greater Montreal
Concordia University Faculty of Arts and Science
We had our inaugural event at Concordia University Faculty of Arts and Science in 2014, and each February, we are excited to have our first event of the year there. Our partnership with Concordia includes STEM workshops for grade nine girls from Montreal local schools with university professors and students guiding them through experiments in the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, and biochemistry. Not only do these workshops expose students to science beyond the standard school curriculum, but they also present STEM topics in a way that’s fun and engaging. In addition to the interactive component, we always begin the day with WIB members sharing their life experiences and paths they took throughout school and their professional life. Finally, we conclude the day with a well-deserved treat: ice cream making with liquid nitrogen – now that’s science!
Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research Center at McGill University
We are privileged to host a yearly event at the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research Center at McGill University to help celebrate Women’s History Month. The McGill students at the center prepare a history quiz that demonstrates the wonderful contribution woman have made to the history of STEM. The grade nine girls from Montreal local schools are split into small groups and are shown various biology workshops that reveal the elements of cancer research. Students meet up again to discuss different educational paths that can lead to a career in STEM fields. We end the day with a lunch where the girls can ask the WIB members and the McGill students questions on their professional experiences.
