WIB-RTP: Virtual Lunch and Learn – Mental Health, April 10, 2024

On April 10, 2024, WIB-RTP hosted a virtual Lunch and Learn on Mental Health with Dr. Michell Kimple. One of the main themes from our discussion with Dr. Kimple was that women should not feel guilty if we are not giving 100% to everyone – our work, our family, our friends, etc. We need to prioritize our mental health and ensure we can turn off our brains and be present. Practicing yoga, other physical activity, or whatever activity brings us joy and tranquility is important. Even though it bombards us, we can find solace in fasting from social media. It is okay to tell people no and not heap more onto our already busy lives.

Michelle explained that life is like a deck of cards; sometimes, we shuffle the career card to the top of the deck, and our personal card is at the bottom of the deck. But, if we do not ensure our mental well-being, we will not be able to function at work, for our family and friends, or for ourselves. Dr. Kimple hopes that by sharing her mental health journey and obtaining reasonable accommodations to thrive at work, she will inspire others to do the same and realize they can be successful and achieve goals. The keys to successfully navigating and maintaining good mental health are to prioritize yourself, have a support system, and seek help/therapy and medication as needed.

“People grow through experiences if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.” – Eleanor Roosevelt.
