On October 11, 2023, Young Women In Bio RTP organized an event at BridgeBio, offering high school students an introduction to the fascinating realm of gene therapy, coupled with valuable hands-on laboratory experience. A total of 43 high school students embarked on a journey of discovery, beginning with an orientation to gene therapy. They then engaged in a series of lab stations, exploring histology, chromatography, DNA extraction, and bioreactors, where they had the opportunity to conduct their own experiments.
Following these interactive lab sessions, attendees gathered for a dinner during which they heard from scientists at BridgeBio about their career journeys. The key message emphasized the importance of finding enjoyment in one's daily work and fostering a supportive team environment. They underscored that careers in STEM are not linear and that many opportunities can arise along the way.
The event left attendees enthusiastic about the prospects within STEM and the practical experience they gained in the laboratory. They acquired insights into the techniques employed in developing gene therapies for treating different diseases. To add an exciting twist, a bioreactor assembly competition was held at one of the lab stations, where teams raced against the clock to complete the challenge as quickly as possible.
Parents had the opportunity to engage with Sam Parham, a college admissions counselor, who was on hand to answer any questions about the college application process while enjoying coffee during the event.
