On March 28, more than 200 students in grades 6–12 from across Los Angeles County came to the Los Angeles Zoo for the 10th Annual Engaging Girls in STEM event, hosted with the Los Angeles County Office of Education. The event focused on getting middle and high school girls interested in STEM careers, with over a dozen organizations leading panel discussions, breakout sessions, and hands-on activities. At the Young Women In Bio table, students learned about DNA by making bracelets based on genetic traits and extracting DNA from strawberries to take home in vial necklaces. YWIB-Los Angeles volunteers also shared their own paths into STEM, giving students a chance to ask questions and make connections. This was the 10th year of the event, and YWIB-Los Angeles plans to participate again next year.
