YWIB-Chicago was so excited to take part in the Museum of Science and Industry's Science Works! The day kicked off with a fun, hands-on experiment where kids extracted DNA from strawberries. Under the guidance of YWIB-Chicago Co-Chairs Neha Shiroor and Amira Alburei, participants of all ages mashed up strawberries, isolated the DNA, and even got to see it up close in vitro. It was a fantastic way to make science come alive and show how genetics determines our physical traits. The event's goal was to spark curiosity and allow Chicago youth to experience real experimental techniques in a fun, approachable way. Around 200 people stopped by throughout the day—and despite the great turnout, we somehow didn’t run out of strawberries! (We even had two cases left over.) The highlight for many was actually being able to see the strawberry DNA with their own eyes. Both kids and adults were amazed by the experience. We are already looking forward to joining Science Works again next year. We can’t wait to keep inspiring the next generation of scientists!
