On Thursday, September 18, Young Women In Bio Chicago and WIB-Chicago’s MAPS Committee joined forces for an electrifying evening of Snacks & Science – Hands-On STEM Experiments, Mentorship, and Discovery at Southside STEM Station. The event kicked off with an interactive “Zombie Apocalypse” activity, where high school students learned viruses aren't just the bad guys—they're also key players in crafting vaccines and groundbreaking medicines like gene and cell therapies. The evening progressed with a rousing discussion facilitated by Sandra Torres, which allowed students to learn more about the educational and professional opportunities in the STEM field. Moreover, MAPS mentees Grace Hynes and Kaitlyn DeMeulenaere extended their mentorship to the students. Everyone enjoyed the sweet treats and irresistible ice cream from Lindsey’s Ice Cream. Kenwood Academy helped rally the students to dive into this STEMtastic adventure. We also tip our STEM hats to Amira Alburei, Neha Shiroor, Anu Ray, Amanda Christine Maldonado, and Katherine Maskel for their contributions to making this event a smashing success!
