WIB-Chicago hosted a discussion on February 19 in recognition of Black History Month, with a conversation centered on resilience, particularly amid a troubling 2025 for Black women in the workforce. The panel was moderated by Dr. Azurii Collier and featured two powerhouse leaders in the Chicago life science ecosystem, Dr. Suzet McKinney and Chrystal Caden Price. Last year saw significant workforce departures among Black women, with estimates suggesting that more than 300,000 left the labor force amid layoffs, DEI rollbacks, and structural inequities. The panel explored what resilient leadership looks like in uncertain times. Both Price and McKinney spoke candidly about reinvention amid economic shifts, collective grief, and professional uncertainty. Price reminded attendees that “you only need one yes in a sea of nos.” McKinney underscored the importance of mental fortitude and redefining success on one’s own terms. Diverse voices, she noted, are essential to an organization’s success.
The panel offered the following advice to attendees:
During the Q&A, the panel addressed leading through fear, overcoming imposter syndrome, and speaking up safely in uncertain environments. A powerful reminder emerged: vulnerability is strength, joy is resistance, and resilience evolves. It is not about powering through at all costs, it is about grounding oneself and rising with intention.
The evening left attendees with a renewed sense of agency, community, and courage. Resilience, as demonstrated by our panelists, is not simply endurance but reinvention, inclusion, and the unwavering decision to keep showing up. Many thanks to the generous sponsors for the event including, Diversity Health Network, MATTER, and 2Flo Ventures, whose continued support makes these important discussions possible.
