WIB-Pittsburgh: Launching Your Career With a Bio‑Related Degree
Pursuing or recently got a bio-related undergraduate degree—Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or similar—and wondering what life after graduation actually looks like? Come listen and talk to a panel of professionals who’ve taken their degrees in various kinds of directions. They’ll share stories and advice about how they launched their careers, what the job search is really like, and how they turned long-term goals into plans. Whether you're exploring options, prepping for applications, or just curious about what’s possible, this panel will give you insight, strategies, and inspiration for your next steps.

Speaker Bios
Sydney Borcherding, Research and Development Engineer at Renerva
Sydney is a Research and Development Engineer at Renerva, Inc., where she specializes in the development of early-stage medical devices, including a nerve cap for the prevention of pain after amputation. With expertise in biomaterial development, preclinical product testing, and quality systems regulation, Sydney has contributed to publications and pending patents in the field of regenerative medicine. A 2022 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a BS in bioengineering, Sydney was a Swanson Engineering Excellence Award recipient, a 3-D printing mentor in the Bioengineering Makerspace, and a research assistant in the Tumor Microenvironment Engineering lab utilizing microfluidic platforms. This fall, she will return to Pitt to pursue her PhD in bioengineering, conducting interdisciplinary research under the dual mentorship of Dr. Dan Shiwarski and Dr. Julie Phillippi.
Kim Daloise, Project Manager at Bayer
Kim is a Project Manager at Bayer with over a decade of experience in quality assurance and engineering roles within medical device development. She holds a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh, where she engaged in research and multiple engineering organizations. She started her career at Bayer in a New Product Development Systems Engineer Co-Op program and has contributed to product development and quality systems across several positions of increasing responsibility. Kim is an active leader in the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), serving in outreach and executive roles to support STEM education for girls and young professionals.
Hayley Jenkins, Clinical Microbiologist and Parasitologist at Quest Diagnostics
Hayley is a 2024 Honors graduate from Duquesne University with a BS in biological science. During her time at Duquesne, Hayley’s research focused on molecular evolution (Functional Evolution of KLK2 and KLK3 Proteases in Hominoid Primates) and public health (Healthcare Disparities in HIV/AIDS: A Comparative Analysis between Rural and Urban Populations in the United States). Since graduation, Hayley has been employed at Quest Diagnostics as a Clinical Microbiologist and Parasitologist. In addition to this role, Hayley is an adjunct faculty member in the Duquesne Biology Department, where she teaches Introduction to Microbiology and Introduction to Life Processes laboratories.
Theresa Wohlever, Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at DNAnexus
Theresa is a senior bioinformatics scientist on the DNAnexus Customer Success team. Her career journey includes leadership positions as a bioinformatics IT manager at Labcorp Diagnostics and as a team lead and project manager at Qiagen Advanced Genomics Custom Services and Solutions. Wohlever launched her career at the Broad Institute, focused on microbial genome assembly and the Human Microbiome Project. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is pursuing a Master of Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business.
