YWIB-Pittsburgh: Exploring Women’s Health at Magee-Womens Research Institute
The Magee-Womens Research Institute is a premier research institute and hospital in Pittsburgh leading the way in women's health worldwide. High School students will have an opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and tours in three laboratories, learning about the techniques used to study cancer and tissue development. In addition, students will meet and network with other young women in science who are forging their paths as future leaders in the field of women's health.
Notes: Closed-toe shoes are required. This is a drop-off event, but parents/guardians have the option to attend

4:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. Arrival, check-in, and introduction
4:15 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Hands-on lab rotations
5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Pizza, refreshments, and panel discussion (with grad students/post-docs)

Speaker Bio
Judith Yanowitz, PhD, Professor at Magee-Womens Research Institute
Dr. Yanowitz received her BS in biology with a minor in literature from MIT in 1991 and worked for two years in Titia de Lange’s laboratory at Rockefeller University studying telomere biology. Judy received her PhD from Princeton University, where she worked on Drosophila melanogaster sex determination and dosage compensation in Paul Schedl’s lab. In 1999, she joined Andy Fire’s lab in the Department of Embryology at the Carnegie Institution, where she identified genes required for mesodermal tissue patterning in the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. Judy started her own lab at the Carnegie Institution in 2004 to study the effect of chromatin on meiotic crossover formation. She joined MWRI and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in November 2009, where she has continued to study meiosis, DNA damage repair, and germ cell development.
