Speaker Bios
Amy Adams, Executive Director of George Mason University’s Institute for Biohealth Innovation (Fairfax, VA), Moderator
Amy is responsible for nurturing and advancing the biohealth research and innovation interests of more than 300 faculty and thousands of students representing a broad range of academic disciplines. Her role includes fostering partnerships, overseeing core laboratory facilities, and creating hubs of innovation. Ms. Adams brings 22 years of experience in higher education and 18 years of developing and managing new programs and organizations focused on research, innovation, and workforce development. Ms. Adams is co-leading the development of an Innovation District anchored by George Mason’s SciTech campus in collaboration with partners from the City of Manassas, Prince William County, and the business community.
Amy Baudino, Vice President, Portfolio Management at Fisher Scientific Channel, North America & Emerging Markets (Pittsburgh, PA)
Amy has over 20 years of experience in the life sciences, research, and production markets. She joined Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2002 as Product Manager and has since held portfolio, channel management, and strategy roles in both the Fisher Scientific and Thermo Scientific businesses. She was named Vice President, Portfolio Management for the Fisher Scientific channel, North America and Emerging Markets, in 2021. Her organization includes divisional and shared service teams in supplier management, product operations, private label strategy, functional optimization, and governance programs such as the Supplier Tiering Program, Supplier Quality, Small & Specialty Supplier, and Sustainability. Amy was appointed site lead for the Pittsburgh location of Thermo Fisher in 2024. Amy is passionate about building a sense of belonging and colleague engagement within the workforce, while strengthening community engagement throughout the Pittsburgh region as well. Amy serves on the Customer Advisory Board of smartsheet.com and recently completed her term as a board member of the Laboratory Products Association. She was named a 2022 Woman of Influence by the Pittsburgh Business Times. Outside of work, Amy supports various local and national organizations focusing on veterans, animals, and youth-based initiatives. She has served as an officer of Orphans of the Storm animal shelter and as chair of Beverly’s PGH. Amy is an avid sports fan and can regularly be found at local arenas with her husband and two stepdaughters. Amy is a two-time graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor’s in microbiology and a master’s in business administration.
Courtney Cavin, COO at Astek Diagnostics (Baltimore, MD)
Courtney is the COO of Astek Diagnostics, leading product development and day-to-day operations for the company’s one-hour UTI and antibiotic-susceptibility test. She works with investors and KOLs, engages clinicians nationwide, meets regularly with the FDA, and is a named inventor on a 2025 patent. Outside of work, she mentors with UMBC’s Center for Women in Technology and is on the STEM Advisory Committee for The Catholic High School of Baltimore. Courtney has an MS in biochemical engineering.
Betty Woo, Management Consultant, Life Sciences Solutions Group at Thermo Fisher Scientific (Pittsburgh, PA)
Betty serves as a management consultant for Thermo Fisher Scientific, having most recently served as their Vice President of Cell, Gene, and Advanced Therapies (CGAT). In this role, Betty formed and led a business focused on the integration of fit-for-purpose solutions across the Company, enabling CGAT developers and manufacturers to provide safe and effective therapies to patients worldwide. Prior to her CGAT role, Betty initiated a corporate team dedicated to scientific collaboration with Thermo Fisher’s largest strategic customers. Over her 22-year tenure at Thermo Fisher, Betty has served in diverse leadership roles, ranging from general management to technical and commercial leadership positions, always focused on leveraging total company capabilities and innovation to serve customers. Before working with Thermo Fisher, Betty took on various functional leadership roles at a biotechnology start-up, Cellomics, a pioneer in spatial imaging, including business development, product management, sales, and marketing. In addition, Betty served on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in the Department of Pharmacology, where she also completed her post-doctoral studies. She earned her doctorate in pharmacology from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and her undergraduate degree in biological sciences from Carnegie Mellon University. Betty serves on several advisory boards, including the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine, Standards Coordinating Body, International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy, and Pittsburgh Life Sciences Alliance.
