Join us for the first installment of the WIB-Metro New York MAPS Committee's Careers in Life Sciences Panel Series, featuring an engaging discussion with four venture capital professionals. This 60-minute session will explore career paths, day-to-day responsibilities, and advice for those interested in pursuing opportunities in venture capital. Julia Velez, Chair of the WIB-Metro New York MAPS Committee, will moderate the conversation. Participants are encouraged to submit questions in advance or during the live discussion.

Speaker Bios
Silvia Codony, Assistant Vice President at New York Ventures
Silvia is a venture investor, entrepreneur, and life sciences executive with over 20 years of experience in medical devices, biotech, and digital health. Silvia is passionate about innovation and entrepreneurship, being an active mentor and speaker at accelerators and events. Before becoming a venture investor, she co-founded a digital health company. Silvia held several leadership and consulting roles in the industry, including biotech, medical device, and digital health companies across therapeutic areas such as cardiology, urology, plastic surgery, rare diseases, and diabetes. Silvia started her career in Europe and moved to the States years ago to build the US affiliate for a European company. She has worked in sales and business development, has a technical background in clinical and regulatory affairs, and holds an MSc in mathematics and an MBA from IE Business School.
Sonia Gulati, Principal at Global BioAccess Fund
Sonia has a broad background in life sciences venture capital, biotechnology strategy consulting, and basic science research. Prior to joining the Fund, Sonia served as an Executive in Residence (EIR) at Kairos Ventures, where she focused on venture creation. As an EIR, she was responsible for both driving the investment process and acting as interim CEO for her newly formed portfolio companies. Before joining Kairos Ventures, Sonia was Assistant Director at New York Ventures, where she managed the life sciences portfolio. Prior to her move to investing, Sonia worked at a boutique healthcare consultancy where she helped shape product launch and life cycle management strategies for biopharma. Sonia completed her post-doctoral studies and received her PhD from the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. She has a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University.
Ruth Segall, Associate at Windham Capital Partners
Ruth is an Associate at Windham Capital Partners, where she is responsible for sourcing, due diligence, and supporting our portfolio companies after investment. Prior to joining Windham, Ruth was a Regulatory Affairs Specialist at Arthrex. In this market-leading orthopedic device company, she was part of the founding team of its cardiothoracic business unit. Ruth’s prior experience in venture capital includes an internship at LifeX, a life sciences and healthcare accelerator and early-stage fund, where she supported business development for its accelerator companies. Ruth received her BS in biochemistry & cell biology from Bucknell University, where she was an NCAA D1 athlete, and her MS in bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh.
Julie Wolf, PhD, Partner at 2048 Ventures
Julie is a Partner at 2048 Ventures, where she leads biotech and healthcare verticals. She is an investor in more than 50 startups, and is interested in platform technologies and founders transforming human health. Before 2048 Ventures, Julie was Chief Science Officer and a member of the founding investment team at SOSV’s IndieBio New York. Prior to entering her investment career, she worked in scientific research, communications, and biotech entrepreneurship. She holds a PhD in microbiology, immunology, and cancer biology from the University of Minnesota and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
