Our September book selection has changed! We'll now discuss Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI by Karen Hao, a New York Times bestselling, award-winning account of OpenAI's rise and the global race to develop artificial intelligence. Drawing on extensive reporting, Hao examines the people, ambitions, resources, and tradeoffs behind today’s AI boom, including questions of power, labor, data, environmental impact, and technological responsibility. We'll focus on how emerging technologies are developed and governed, the tension between innovation and responsibility, and the role scientists and life sciences professionals can play in shaping how AI is used in research, medicine, and society.
