WIB-Capital Region: Negotiating, Promoting, and Publishing With Confidence
Whether you're launching your career or preparing for your next opportunity, success in science requires more than strong technical skills. This practical three-part workshop brings together experts with complementary perspectives to help attendees navigate critical career milestones. While their shared background is in NMR spectroscopy, their advice will be applicable across scientific disciplines.
Together, these sessions highlight key elements of career advancement, from securing new opportunities and increasing your professional visibility to successfully publishing your research.
*Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of his complete workshop slides following the session. WIB is delighted to welcome Dr. Martin back for a second collaboration and thanks him for partnering with us on this professional development opportunity.

Samantha (Sam) Miller, PhD, Staff Analytical Chemist/Contractor for Eli Lilly
After receiving the opportunity to work at the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) in Boulder through a National Science Foundation INTERN fellowship during her last year of graduate school, she proceeded to a post doc there for another two years. She transitioned to the pharmaceutical industry in 2025, joining Eli Lilly, where she now works as a contractor with Cogent Scientific. Sam serves on the Practical Applications of NMR in Industry Conference (PANIC). Sam earned her PhD in chemistry at Colorado State University.
Savanah L. Shumaker, PMP, Chapter Vice Chair, Women In Bio Capital Region
Savanah is a dedicated chemist and entrepreneur with a passion for scientific outreach and communication. For nearly ten years, Savanah worked as a research scientist in industry, government, and academia before transitioning to undergraduate education two years ago. In her “free time,” she is the Co-Founder of 8 Count Cosmetics, Chapter Vice Chair of Women In Bio Capital Region, and Chair of the Practical Applications of NMR in Industry Conference (PANIC).
Gary E. Martin, PhD, Retired Editor-In-Chief of Magnetic Resonance In Chemistry and Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Seton Hall University
After completing his PhD in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Kentucky in 1976, Gary moved into academia, becoming a tenured professor at the University of Houston for 13 years, then transitioned to the pharmaceutical industry for nearly the next 30 years, retiring from Merck in 2018. He returned to teaching graduate spectroscopy courses at Seton Hall University and Stevens Institute of Technology – he still holds adjunct faculty appointments at both universities and has co-directed the research of a number of PhD graduates. He has published extensively throughout his academic and industrial career, with more than 325 refereed scientific publications and nearly 50 chapters to his credit. He was the senior author of an early 2D NMR monograph, as well as editor or section editor of six other volumes devoted to NMR spectroscopy. He served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry from 2016 to 2024 and was an assistant editor of The Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry from 1984 to 2025.
