WIB-Seattle DEI: Picture a Scientist Mini-Series Coffee Chat
Please join us for our first mini-documentary and podcast series, a coffee-chat-style conversation for your lunch break! As a follow-up to our book club earlier this year (if you missed it, check out The Exceptions by Kater Zernike!), we encourage you to watch the documentary Picture a Scientist. Then, listen to parts 1 & 2 of the discussions on this documentary between Wisecast and the Postdoc Transformation Show. Finally, grab a coffee and join colleagues and WIB-Seattle DEI Committee Chair, Dana Jessen-Howard for a casual, remote chat on the series.
Picture a Scientist chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

You can find the documentary through Amazon Prime with PBS video (either via a 7-day free trial or by renting the movie for about $6). (Find alternative options to watch linked here!)
Find the first episode of the podcast series here: Wisecast S4.E12. Through Our Lenses: Picture a Scientist Part 1 (or wherever you get your podcasts!)
In this episode, we dissect the documentary Picture a Scientist with special guest Dr. Eleonore Soie-Winkels, aka Postdoc Transformation. We analyze the film's portrayal of women in STEM and our own experiences. Is it an accurate reflection of the challenges and triumphs we face?
Find the second episode of the podcast series here: Pt 2. The Postdoc transformation show (or wherever you get your podcasts!)
In this Postdoc Transformation Show episode, Prof. Dr. Richa Chandra and Dr. Amber Miller from Wisecast talk with Prof. Dr. Eleonore Soei-Winkels about the challenges faced by women in STEM, particularly in academia. They focus on microaggressions, intersectionality, and barriers to career progression. They highlight the importance of empowering women and daughters, advocating for diversity in hiring practices, and transitioning into business. The conversation delves into the impact of biases, the need for inclusivity, and efforts to create a more equitable environment in STEM fields.
