WIB-Capital Region: From Classroom to Career – How to Get Published
This workshop is a comprehensive 3-in-1 session targeting soon-to-be graduates, postdocs, and early-career women in STEM fields. Dr. Samantha Miller specializes in early career advice, emphasizing the strategies for success in male-dominated STEM fields. Dr. Gary Martin shares insights from his renowned How to Get Published workshop, offering invaluable advice from an Editor-In-Chief. All attendees will receive a free copy of his workshop deck. Savanah Shumaker concludes with tips on establishing a strong LinkedIn presence for sharing your work.
Despite a common background in NMR spectroscopy, the workshop applies to any scientific specialty. Special thanks to Dr. Martin for generously providing his presentation and slide deck to all attendees.

Dr. Samantha L. Miller, Post Doctoral Research Fellow at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Samantha completed her undergraduate studies in chemistry at Lake Forest College. In 2017, she began her doctoral program in chemistry at Colorado State University, where her research used 1D EXSY NMR to quantify hydrogen exchange in nanosized reverse micelles. During her graduate studies, she simultaneously worked at the NMR core facility, where she enjoyed training and mentoring other students. After receiving the opportunity to work at NIST Boulder through a National Science Foundation INTERN fellowship during her last year of graduate school, she learned the techniques necessary for high-pressure NMR experiments. She remains at NIST Boulder to this day as a National Research Council post-doc and is part of the Scientific Organizing Committee for the Practical Applications of NMR in Industry Conference (PANIC).
Dr. Gary E. Martin, Adjunct Professor and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry
After completing his PhD in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Kentucky in 1976, Gary was a tenured professor at the University of Houston for 13 years and moved from academia to the pharmaceutical industry for nearly the next 30 years, retiring from Merck in 2018 and returned to teaching graduate spectroscopy courses at Seton Hall University and Stevens Institute of Technology – he holds adjunct faculty appointments at both universities. He has published very extensively over the course of his academic and industrial career, with more than 325 refereed scientific publications and nearly 50 chapters to his credit. He was the senior author of a 2D NMR monograph, as well as editor or section editor of 6 other volumes devoted to spectroscopy. He has been the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry since 2016 and an assistant editor of The Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry since 1984. He has written papers and given numerous lectures and workshops on how to get published both in the US and South America.
Savanah L. Saldaña-Shumaker, MS, Analytical Chemist, NMR Spectroscopy at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)
Savanah L. Saldaña-Shumaker was born and raised in Green Bay, WI. She has earned a technical diploma in Dental Assisting from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC), a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay (UWGB), an MBA Certificate in Management from Concordia University Wisconsin’s (CUW) Batterman School of Business, and a Master of Science in Chemical Product Development degree from CUW School of Pharmacy. She has worked as a research scientist in industry, academic, and government laboratories. Currently, Savanah works as a Federal Contractor at the National Institutes of Health – National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. At NIH/NCATS, Savanah works in the Division of Preclinical Innovation’s Analytical Chemistry Core, specializing in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Outside of her traditional “nine-to-five” job, Savanah works on two startups that she founded and volunteers for a variety of scientific organizations: Co-Chair of Sponsorship for the Women In Bio (WIB) Capital Region, Organizing Committee for the Practical Applications of NMR in Industry Conference (PANIC), and Board of Manager for the Chemical Society of Washington (CSW).
